Private sector engagement strategy

Context
My client had embarked on a strategic evolution from a traditional donor-funded nonprofit into a fourth-sector organization with aspirations to pursue its mission primarily via the market-based exchange of value (i.e., earned income). The client sought to define how to engage private sector entities to enable this evolution, moving beyond the traditional corporation-as-donor model.

Key Question
In what ways should we engage the private sector to enable our evolution into a mission-driven organization funded primarily via the market-based exchange of value (i.e., earned income)?

Solution
I helped the client understand the unique value it could provide to private sector entities based on its distinctive capabilities, described opportunities to monetize that value and developed a roadmap for evolution into the future state. Activities included:
  • Analyzed the client's capabilities and articulated a distinctive value proposition to the private sector.
  • Identified opportunity areas for income-generating services.
  • Prioritized current portfolio of corporate partnerships.
  • Developed financial projections.
  • Recommended implementation roadmap.
Results
Based on my recommendations, my client's product and geography business units were able to formulate plans to engage the private sector, and my client was able to prioritize the allocation of limited resources to the most strategic opportunities.
